Visiting the Stupa de Benalmádena? Prepare to feel zen

If you're looking for tranquility with a touch of the extraordinary, the Stupa de Benalmádena should be on your list. This Buddhist monument isn’t just a treat for the eyes—it’s a place where mind and surroundings find harmony. You don’t have to be a yoga pro to enjoy the peace here—though slipping off your shoes certainly helps.

The largest Enlightenment Stupa in the West

Standing 33 meters tall, the Stupa rises above the Costa del Sol. That makes it the largest Enlightenment Stupa in Europe—and even in the entire Western Hemisphere. It’s been here since 2003, thanks to Bhutanese master Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche, his students, and support from the Benalmádena town council. Since then, it’s become both a local landmark and a spiritual refuge.

More than just a monument

Unlike most traditional stupas, this one isn’t a sealed structure. Inside, you’ll find a spacious meditation hall where talks, ceremonies, and mindfulness sessions are held regularly. Visitors are welcome to listen, reflect, or simply take a quiet moment. The Asociación Cultural Karma Kagyu manages the spiritual program here, under the guidance of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje.

Buddhist symbolism set in stone

Every Buddhist stupa symbolizes a key moment in the Buddha’s life. Benalmádena’s Stupa is an Enlightenment Stupa—or “Chang Chub Chorten” in Tibetan. Its shape, proportions, and symbolism are carefully designed. Even the interior—filled with sacred objects and scriptures—follows ancient traditions, all consecrated by high-ranking lamas.

A clockwise stroll for good fortune

No visit is complete without a lap around the stupa. Clockwise, of course. According to Buddhist tradition, you walk with a wish or intention in mind. No promises—but definitely a mindful habit. And let’s face it: if the view over the Mediterranean doesn’t clear your head, what will?

Triunfos de San Rafael in Córdoba

In Córdoba you’ll spot them more often than you expect: monumental statues of Archangel San Rafael. Scattered across squares, near churches, and even on bridges. For locals, these aren’t just sculptures but silent guardians watching over the city. During hard times, like epidemics, new monuments were raised in his honor. The result? A city full of stone witnesses of faith and hope.
