Victoria Málaga: a beer with a backstory

Some beers are brewed. Others are born into tradition. Victoria Málaga is the latter. Since 1928, this crisp lager has carried the flavour of Málaga’s spirit, sunshine and stubborn character. Curious where all that heritage fits in a single bottle? Here’s how a local beer became a cultural landmark.
Brewing since 1928
The story starts on 8 September 1928, the feast day of Málaga’s patron saint. In the El Perchel district, the Franquelo family opened a small brewery with one goal: to bottle the soul of Málaga. German brewing techniques met Andalusian flair. The result? A beer that felt local but tasted international.
A beer that kept going
The Spanish Civil War forced a pause, but not a full stop. In 1937, Victoria Málaga fired up its kettles again. Supplies were scarce, but determination wasn’t. The beer made a comeback, just like the city it came from.
Say hi to the German tourist
Fast-forward to the 1960s. Málaga was booming with beach-hungry tourists, and Victoria made one of them famous. The smiling, shirted German tourist on the label became an icon. Instantly recognisable. Unapologetically friendly. Just like the beer itself.
No brewery? No problem
In the late '60s, urban development pushed the brewery out of town. But instead of fading away, Victoria doubled down. They sponsored football matches, backed local events and stayed visible. The beer lived on in every celebration, game and festival.
Back with a modern twist
On its 89th birthday, Victoria Málaga opened a new chapter — and a new brewery. Sleek on the outside, traditional on the inside. Here, brewing meets high-tech without losing that hands-on feel. The building isn’t just for beer. It’s for culture, tastings and a proper look behind the scenes.
Tour the brewing process
You can watch every step. From the mash to the fermentation tanks, it’s all laid out during the guided tour. Curious how a 12-day maturation period shapes the taste? You’ll see it. And smell it. And eventually, taste it.
Taste it for yourself
Once you’ve seen the brewing, it’s time for trying. A tasting session lets you sample different Victoria beers — smooth, sharp or somewhere in between. Feeling competitive? Try your hand at the beer-pulling challenge. Foam control is key.
Bring the story home
No need to leave empty-handed. The shop offers postcards, openers and that famous 3/4-size bottle in screen-printed glass. Small souvenirs, big nostalgia.
Victoria Málaga: more than a beer
Victoria Málaga isn’t just a drink. It’s part of the city’s DNA. A reminder that tradition and change can fit in one glass — and that good things really do take time.
