Trevélez and Siete Lagunas: pure mountain magic in Spain

Tucked away in the stunning Sierra Nevada mountains, Trevélez and Siete Lagunas are two high-altitude gems that mix peace, rugged beauty, and a splash of adventure. In the province of Granada, this region offers clean air, deep valleys, and endless trails. Whether you're in it for the views, the hikes, or the ham, this is your place.

Trevélez: Spain’s highest village

At 1,476 meters above sea level, Trevélez is the highest village in Spain. Whitewashed houses cling to steep mountain slopes, and the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada rise dramatically in the background. This is also the land of jamón serrano, the famous cured ham that thrives in the crisp, dry mountain air.

What to do in Trevélez

Tour a jamón producer
Step into one of the local curing houses. You’ll learn how the ham is made and sample slices that melt on your tongue.

Stroll the village streets
Wander through narrow alleys, white facades, and steep staircases. The Plaza de la Constitución is a must, with its stone church and mountain views.

Hit the trails
From Trevélez, trails head straight into the Sierra Nevada. Whether you're after a gentle walk or a tough climb, there's a route with your name on it.

Try local dishes
Besides jamón, don’t miss the plato alpujarreño. It’s a mountain-style plate loaded with sausage, eggs, potatoes and more.

Siete Lagunas: where hikers meet silence

If you’re up for a challenge, follow the trail from Trevélez to Siete Lagunas. It means “Seven Lagoons,” and it’s exactly that — a remote set of alpine lakes surrounded by peaks and silence.

The trail to Siete Lagunas

The hike to Siete Lagunas is tough, but rewarding. The path takes you through forests, streams, and steep terrain. The higher you go, the wider the views. Snow, sun, and sky all fight for your attention.

When you reach the top, you’ll find seven glacial lakes sitting calmly among meadows and rocks. On a clear day, the reflections on the water are unreal. You can dip your feet, have lunch, or just sit in the silence.

Hiking tips for Siete Lagunas

Pack smart
Bring strong hiking boots, warm layers (yes, even in summer), and plenty of water and food.

Go slow
The air is thinner up here. Take your time, especially if you’re not used to high altitudes.

Leave no trace
Take all your trash back down. Help keep this fragile spot as wild as it looks.

Watch the weather
Mountain weather changes fast. Check the forecast before you start. Bring a jacket, just in case.

A place to hike, eat and breathe

Trevélez and Siete Lagunas are more than just scenic spots on the map. They’re places where the food is honest, the trails are quiet, and the views never stop. Whether you're coming for the ham or heading for the hills, the Sierra Nevada gives you space to explore at your own pace.

Sunscreen is the new chic

The sun on the Costa del Sol doesn’t play nice. While you think you're just soaking up the rays, your skin is already in panic mode. And honestly? It's not winning that battle without help. UV rays here are way more intense than back in Belgium or the Netherlands. One unprotected afternoon on the beach and you’ll be rocking the lobster look. Not exactly this season’s trend.
