Tostón Popular in Ojén: 30 years of roasted chestnuts and good vibes

Every first Sunday after All Saints’ Day, something special happens in the white village of Ojén. On 3 November 2024, the streets will fill once again with the unmistakable scent of roasted chestnuts. This year marks the 30th edition of the Tostón Popular. What started as a small harvest tradition in 1992 has become one of the most anticipated festivals in the Málaga region.
A Sunday that smells like chestnuts
The Tostón kicks off early. From 10:00 AM, locals fire up the roasting drums and bring the village to life. Chestnuts are the main star, but they’re not alone. You’ll also find sizzling bacon, spicy chorizo, and other local treats ready to be devoured. All homemade. All bursting with flavour.
Music that gets your feet moving
By midday, the Plaza de Andalucía transforms into a mini-concert zone. A lively verdiales band in the style of Almogía takes the stage. With tambourines, guitars and castanets, the music fills the square—and your mood. It’s cheerful, fast-paced, and nearly impossible to ignore.
Chestnuts meet childhood memories
At 5:00 PM, the focus shifts to fun and games. Traditional activities take over the square. Think sack races, tug-of-war, and other classics that bring out everyone’s inner child. It's a family-friendly moment that links the old with the new, without losing any of the charm.
A festival rooted in community
The Tostón is organised by the San Dionisio Cultural Association, and it’s more than a day of roasted snacks. It’s a tribute to the soul of Ojén. A way for neighbours and newcomers to connect over something simple and warm—both literally and figuratively.
Plan your visit
If you’re looking for a feel-good Sunday in an Andalusian mountain village, mark 3 November on your calendar. Bring your appetite, wear comfy shoes, and prepare to leave with a full belly and a big smile.
