Snow in May? Sierra Nevada Says Yes

Just when everyone had put away their skis, the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain threw a chilly curveball. A heavy snowfall blanketed the peaks — the thickest of the year — even though the ski season officially ended weeks ago. Locals were stunned. Tourists checked their calendars. And nature reminded us who’s really in charge.

🌼 Spring Below, Winter Above

Early May usually means almond blossoms and t-shirt weather in Andalusia. But up in the Sierra Nevada? Powder. Lots of it. The sudden weather change painted the peaks white again, creating a surreal split-screen: snow-covered slopes above and green valleys blooming below. Instagram loved it.

⛷️ Spontaneous Ski Trips and Happy Snowboarders

For winter sport fans, this was a second chance. Skis came out of storage, weekend plans changed, and thrill-seekers hit the slopes for one last ride. It wasn't planned, but it was epic. The lifts stayed closed, but that didn’t stop the truly determined.

🚧 Slippery Roads and a Bit of Chaos

Not everyone was thrilled, though. Roads iced over. Mountain routes became tricky. And emergency crews had to spring into action to manage safety and traffic. It’s not the kind of weather local infrastructure was ready for. Especially not in May.

🌍 Nature’s Mood Swings

Weather models didn’t see it coming. But that’s the thing about mountains — they make their own rules. Climate patterns are changing, and this surprise snowfall is one more nudge to stay flexible. Whether you’re a traveler or a local, being prepared for anything is part of the deal.

📸 A View Worth the Freeze

Despite the cold and chaos, the scenery was something else. Snow-draped ridges framed by green valleys made for some jaw-dropping views. Photographers, hikers, and anyone with a drone had a field day. Even if you weren’t there, your feed probably was.

So, is this the start of summer or the encore of winter? In the Sierra Nevada, it might just be both.
