Walking Along Water, Nature, and History on the Sendero El Santiscal (Cádiz)
A route full of surprises
The Sendero El Santiscal walk starts in the El Santiscal neighborhood, on the edge of Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz). Right away, you follow an irrigation canal that waters the nearby fields. The gentle sound of flowing water and the green surroundings create a calm atmosphere. This first part is flat and easy — a great way to warm up.
A nature reserve starring birds
Shortly after, a small side path leads to a special nature area: the Cola del Embalse de Arcos. This protected zone is part of the European Natura 2000 network and home to many water birds. They nest among the reeds and riverside plants. Around sunset, the area comes alive as the birds return from feeding, creating a vibrant scene.
Along the water towards the old town
Back on the main path, the trail runs along the shores of the Arcos reservoir. You pass a man-made beach, perfect for relaxing in summer. Nearby is the local water sports center, offering activities like canoeing and windsurfing.
A view that stays with you
From the shore, you look out over the reservoir with the historic center of Arcos de la Frontera above. The white houses and narrow streets stand out against the sky, while the water reflects the landscape. A fitting end to a walk full of contrasts — from farmland to nature, calm to stunning views.
