Ruta de las Atalayas, Alcalá la Real (Jaén): hiking
Route of the Watchtowers
In the hills around Alcalá la Real, province of Jaén, ancient watchtowers still rise proudly above the landscape. In the Middle Ages, they formed a defensive network, sending smoke signals between Alcaudete, Moclín, and even the Alhambra. Smart, fast, and surprisingly efficient. The towers were cylindrical, about eleven meters high, with an interior staircase leading to the roof where fires were lit. Today, they form a scenic route full of history and stunning viewpoints.
La Dehesilla Watchtower
La Dehesilla is the best-preserved of them all. A solid round tower built with precision-cut stones, a balcony that has survived the centuries, and just one room inside. Its most important feature? The fireplace. Without that flame, there was no warning, no signal, no safety. Simple, yet brilliant.
La Moraleja Watchtower
La Moraleja stands out for its sturdy design. Its slightly conical base adds stability, and the high entrance—once reached by wooden beams—kept intruders out. On top, a circular balcony offered wide, open views over the rugged landscape. Perfect for spotting enemies early—or now, simply to enjoy the panorama.
El Cascante Watchtower
Dating back to the 14th century, El Cascante still shows three distinct parts: the reinforced base, the elevated entrance, and a small upper balcony. Here, guards once kept constant watch over the horizon. Today, it stands as a silent reminder of a medieval network built on vigilance and fire.
In short, the Route of the Watchtowers isn’t just a hike—it’s a walk through the clever medieval “alarm system” of Andalusia, with views that make every step worth it.
