Red Carnation: Spain’s National Flower

Rode Anjers

The Carnation: A Flower With Meaning

A carnation is more than just a pretty flower. It carries deep emotional and cultural meaning. From ancient art to modern traditions, the carnation has stood the test of time. Curious about what it means, what the colors say, and where it comes from? We’ll explain it all.

What a Carnation Stands For

This flower is a symbol of love, passion and romance. During the Renaissance, artists often painted it in engagement scenes. Want to express desire or admiration? A carnation gets the message across. The color plays a big role in what it means.

Red, White and Pink Carnations: What They Say

Each color has its own story.

Red: A red carnation stands for love, admiration and longing. In Spain, it’s the national flower. In Portugal, it became the symbol of the Carnation Revolution in 1974.
White: White carnations stand for respect, loyalty and strength. In the Netherlands, they became a symbol of resistance during World War II. On Veterans Day, people still wear them.
Pink: This color is often linked to Mother’s Day. It shows love and gratitude, especially for mothers. There’s also a strong connection to the Virgin Mary.
Green: Less known, but in Ireland the green carnation is worn during St. Patrick’s Day.

Where the Carnation Comes From

This flower has its roots along the Mediterranean coast. The ancient Romans already used it in garlands and perfumes. Its Latin name, Dianthus, means ‘divine flower’. That name shows how special this bloom was, even back then. In religious art, the carnation often appears as a symbol for Mary or the suffering of Christ.

Still Popular Today

Whether you give a red carnation to a partner, wear a white one on Veterans Day, or bring a pink one for your mom, the meaning stays strong. That may be why the carnation is still loved after thousands of years.

Paz Vega: From Seville to Hollywood

Paz Vega, originally Paz Campos Trigo, entered the world in Seville in 1976. That surname Vega? A nod to her grandmother. Smart move, because that name sticks. She started with comedy in the TV series 7 vidas, but her big moment came in 2001. Lucía y el sexo by Julio Medem accelerated her career. The Goya Award for Best Female Breakthrough followed, plus the Chopard Trophy at the Cannes Film Festival. Pretty impressive for an actress who had just moved from small screen to big screen.
