Parque de Huelin: green space near the sea

Parque-de-Huelin

In the Huelin district of Málaga, you’ll find a spacious city park covering around 32,000 square metres. It used to be the site of old oil storage facilities. For years, the area was closed off due to soil pollution. Since 2002, it’s been a public park where locals and visitors can relax, play and unwind.

Trees, water and a local fishing boat

More than 30 different trees and plants grow in the park. In the centre is a large lake with a small palm-filled island. You’ll also spot a traditional fishing boat like the ones still used along the Málaga coast.

On one side of the park flows a narrow stream. A wooden bridge crosses it, giving the area a cosy, natural feel.

Space for kids, sport and dogs

Children can go wild on the playgrounds, which are designed for all age groups. Sporty types head to the football or basketball courts, or use the outdoor gym. Prefer to take it easy? Stretch out on the grass or visit the rose garden.

Dog owners love the dog park. It’s fenced off, so dogs can run freely without worry.

Art and landmarks in the open air

One of the eye-catchers in the park is a small white lighthouse next to the lake. Elsewhere, you’ll come across two sculptures: a bust of José María Martín Carpena and a group of figures holding hands, a tribute to volunteers in Málaga.

Good to know before you go

Parque de Huelin is open daily. In winter, from 8:00 to 23:00. In summer, until midnight. Entrance is free. Dogs and bikes are allowed.

Getting there is easy. Buses 1, 3, 10, 16, 19 and 27 stop nearby. For current times, check the EMT Málaga website.

A peaceful break just outside the centre

Whether you want to run, play, picnic or sit in the sun, this park has something for everyone. Parque de Huelin is a great choice for a quiet moment away from the buzz of the city.
