Vélez-Málaga just added a bit more soul to its streets. On Plaza de las Carmelitas, a bronze figure now welcomes you with calm eyes and a cat at her feet. It’s María Zambrano. Philosopher, writer, and Vélez-Málaga native.

A Statue with a Story

This isn’t just another sculpture. It’s personal. The piece was created by Francisco Martín, a respected sculptor from nearby Torre del Mar. At 165 cm tall, it matches María’s real height. Her trusted cat sits beside her, a subtle nod to her lifelong fondness for feline company.

A plaque next to the statue features one of her own phrases:
“Vélez-Málaga, my city, you have been love across so many borders, through so many episodes, through so much pain.”

The statue didn’t just appear overnight. The María Zambrano Foundation spent months working on this project. Their goal was clear: give María a permanent place in the city that shaped her thinking. They operate out of the Palacio del Marqués de Beniel, just a short walk away.

Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer, who also leads the Foundation, explained why this matters:
“María Zambrano and her legacy are essential to the cultural and intellectual identity of Vélez-Málaga and the Axarquía region.”
