Hiking the Gran Senda del Camino Mozárabe de Santiago

A scenic stage from Almogía to Villanueva de la Concepción
Start your journey in Almogía
Your route begins just outside the quiet village of Almogía (Málaga). From La Noria Hostel, follow the trail past local sports fields and the Caleta urbanization. The first kilometers take you through farmland filled with olive trees, almond groves, and Mediterranean brush. The path changes often—sometimes wide and easy, other times narrow and less defined. Keep your eyes on the signs.
Through the Dehesa landscape
The trail leads you through the Dehesa, a broad and open area that’s well maintained. It’s here that walking becomes more relaxed, although crossroads can be tricky. Stay alert to avoid taking the wrong turn.
At around kilometer 7, you’ll see Puerto Pacheco ahead. From here, the cliffs of El Torcal begin to appear on the horizon. You’ll also catch your first glimpse of Villanueva de la Concepción, still small in the distance. The landscape begins to shift—forests make way for wheat fields that stretch across the hills.
Descent to the Río Campanillas
As you descend, you’ll pass the Pacheco farm and cross the Río Campanillas at kilometer 12.2. This is also where you briefly meet the A-7075 road. After another 3.2 km, you rejoin the road and follow it for 2 km. Along the way, you’ll cross the Horcajo Bridge before leaving the main road again for the old Camino Real.
Final stretch into Villanueva de la Concepción
The last part of the stage takes you along a peaceful path that leads straight into the village. It ends at the local pilgrims’ hostel, marking the completion of this beautiful section.
