Hiking from Puerto Saucillo to Puerto Bellina

Puerto Saucillo

A Natural Escape at 1,200 Meters

Puerto Saucillo near Yunquera in Málaga offers stunning views over the Guadalhorce Valley and the surrounding mountains. It sits 1,200 meters above sea level and is a great starting point for an easy circular walk. The area is full of contrast: rocky cliffs, evergreen shrubs, and ancient forests with pinsapo trees. These rare Spanish firs grow only in a few places in southern Spain.

Getting There: Mountain Road Adventure

To reach the trailhead, drive up from Yunquera. Start at the gas station along the A-366 and follow the forest road for about 6 kilometers. The road is a mix of asphalt and gravel, winding through green hills. At the top, you’ll find a small parking area. Before you start walking, take in the view from Puerto Saucillo. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

Through the Forest of Pinsapos

The trail starts with a gentle downhill slope. Soon, you’re surrounded by pines and firs. As you climb again, the forest becomes denser. You’ll see tall pinsapo trees with twisted branches, some reaching over 17 meters. The most impressive one is the Pinsapo del Candelabro, named for its shape that looks like a giant candelabra. It’s one of the highlights along the way.

Wildlife and Birdwatching

This trail is full of life. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, foxes, and even mongooses. Overhead, you might spot a golden eagle or short-toed snake eagle circling the skies. Songbirds like thrushes and blackbirds provide a peaceful soundtrack as you walk.

Ice Wells from the Past

On your way back, you’ll pass an old pozo de nieve—an ancient snow pit. These stone-lined wells were once used to store snow and ice. Long before fridges, locals used them to keep food cool or deliver ice to nearby towns. It’s a quiet reminder of how people lived with the seasons.

Wrapping Up the Loop

The last stretch takes you downhill again, past more pinsapos and soft forest trails. While the path is well marked, parts can be loose or rocky. Good hiking shoes are a smart idea. The route ends back at Puerto Saucillo, where you might spot another eagle soaring high above the trees.

A Short Yet Rewarding Walk

The hike from Puerto Saucillo to Puerto Bellina is just over 4 kilometers and takes about 90 minutes. It’s perfect if you want a short nature break with big rewards. Between the forest, the wildlife, and the history, this trail shows a different side of southern Spain—quiet, green, and full of surprises.
