In the south of Granada province, near the edge of the Sierra Nevada, you'll find Dúrcal. A sunny spot where mountain water flows every day and the heat takes it slow. Thanks to its sheltered location, the temperature stays pleasant — even when the rest of Andalusia starts to sizzle. That’s good news for hikers, because Dúrcal is the starting point for trails that come with wet socks and cool memories.

The Ruta de Los Bolos: hiking with a splash

The Ruta de Los Bolos begins just outside the village, near Los Mondarinos. It leads you along a wild path next to the river, deep into the lower parts of the Sierra Nevada natural park. No smooth walking lanes here — expect stream crossings, slippery rocks and the occasional scramble.

There’s plenty to look forward to: small waterfalls, natural pools and water so cold it wakes you right up. The most exciting part? A narrow climb along an old irrigation canal. Steep, tight, and just tricky enough to make you take off your backpack.

Not in the mood for acrobatics? Stick to the riverbed. The final reward is worth it either way: a waterfall with three icy pools underneath — perfect for a refreshing dip. The route is about 10 kilometres long and takes four to six hours, depending on your swimming breaks.

Walks that start at the Ermita de San Blas

The Ermita de San Blas is a popular starting point for shorter trails around Dúrcal. These are perfect for hot days and easy afternoons. Most of them end with clear spring water, cool toes included.

San Blas – Baño Chico
A short walk to the Urquízar springs. Easy terrain, fresh water at the finish.

San Blas – Baño Grande
Just like its little brother, but ending at the Manantial de Vacamía. Yes, more water.

San Blas – Arroyo del Alcázar
Heads towards a small waterfall. Not too tough, with plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the view.

San Blas – Castillo de Dúrcal
Prefer walking up? This one takes you to the ruins of Dúrcal’s old castle. The valley view is a bonus.

San Blas – Cueva de los Riscos
A steeper trail with a natural cave at the end. A little bit of Indiana Jones on the side.

San Blas – Manantial Río Dúrcal
Leads to another set of springs near the Dúrcal river. Easy going and great for warm afternoons.

A place for hiking and cooling off

Dúrcal isn’t a place for rushing. The landscape invites you to slow down, cool your feet and take the long way around. Whether you’re in the mood for a big hike or a quick splash, Dúrcal’s trails are ready for you. Just bring good shoes, a drybag and some extra time — you’ll want it.
