Cómpeta: Whitewashed Charm in the Mountains of Andalusia

Cómpeta is a small white village in southern Spain. It sits high in the hills of the Axarquía region, surrounded by rugged peaks and olive groves. The views go on for miles. The atmosphere is relaxed. And the locals? They’re always ready with a smile.

📜 A Past That’s Still Present

Walk through Cómpeta and you’ll see history in every corner. The narrow streets, the old stone walls, and the red-tiled roofs all tell a story. Roman roots. Moorish influence. Centuries of tradition shaped this place into what it is today—a quiet village with a strong identity.

🍷 Wine First, Worries Later

Cómpeta is famous for one thing: muscatel wine. Sweet, golden, and made right here in the hills. Visit one of the small bodegas for a tasting. Sit down. Sip slowly. Enjoy the view. Add a plate of jamón or local goat cheese and you’ve got lunch sorted.

🎉 Parties That Bring the Village Together

Cómpeta knows how to throw a party. In August, the “Noche del Vino” (Night of the Wine) turns the village into one big celebration. Music, dancing, and wine—lots of it. Even outside of festival season, you’ll find processions, markets, and local events that show off Andalusian culture at its best.

🥾 Nature at Your Doorstep

Lace up your hiking boots. Cómpeta borders the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama. These mountains are perfect for walking, climbing, or just taking a break from the city. Trails range from easy strolls to serious climbs. All of them come with sweeping views and fresh mountain air.

🎨 Creative Souls Welcome

Artists love Cómpeta. Maybe it’s the light. Maybe it’s the silence. Maybe it’s the mountain views from every angle. Galleries and studios are scattered through the village. You’ll find handmade pottery, colorful paintings, and one-of-a-kind souvenirs—no imports, no mass production.

🧳 Why Go?

Cómpeta doesn’t try to impress. It just is. Peaceful. Authentic. A bit off the radar. Perfect for anyone who wants slow mornings, scenic walks, and honest food. Just bring good shoes and an appetite for both views and tapas.

Casa Fuerte de Bezmiliana: where history stands tall

In the coastal town of Rincón de la Victoria, you'll find Casa Fuerte de Bezmiliana. This former military fortress was built in 1766 to defend the coast from pirate attacks. After centuries of silence, it was brought back to life in 1992 by architect Álvaro Mendiola. Today, the building looks nothing like a battleground—think more gallery than garrison.
