Chorrera de Balastar is a 10-meter-high waterfall in the Serranía de Ronda. It flows over travertine rocks, creating a stunning water-and-stone show. Surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful forests, it’s a great spot to enjoy calm nature and a bit of adventure. March is the best month to visit when plants and streams are at their fullest.

Getting There

Start your trip in Faraján, a small village with a rich history. The trail begins near the Plaza de Andalucía, just off the main street. From there, the path winds through orchards and past ruins of an old Moorish watermill. Irrigation channels along the way tell stories of centuries past. You’ll hear the water before you see it, guiding you closer to the waterfall.

Nature and Surroundings

The area around Chorrera de Balastar is full of forests with holm oaks, cork oaks, chestnuts, and pines. Traditional crops like olives, almonds, and grapes add to the landscape. Walking paths let you explore this natural and historical mix.

A popular hike climbs 3 kilometers to the top of El Romeral. Along the way, you’ll find Celtic ruins, a Roman wall, and panoramic views of the countryside. Look out for the Dolmen of El Romeral and the Cave of Almendaraches hidden among the pines.

More Waterfalls and History

Nearby, a narrow descent leads to "Las Chorreras" — two more waterfalls fed by the Balastar stream. Here you’ll find ruins of another old mill and stone irrigation channels. This area gives a glimpse of the region’s past and natural beauty combined.

Keep Exploring

Follow the Balastar stream further to reach the Río Genal. From there, return to Faraján via the Molino path, a scenic 3-kilometer trail.

If you have a 4x4 vehicle, try the Moclón path. It passes historic sites like the Real Fábrica de El Molino and Real Fábrica de Hojalata. Crossing the Genal river brings you to Acequia de Chúcar, where you can relax in quiet spots like La Loza and Senegil. When the weather is warm, a swim in the Genal river is refreshing.

A Natural Escape

Chorrera de Balastar offers a mix of nature, history, and adventure. Whether you walk through ancient landscapes, explore waterfalls, or just soak up the calm, this part of the Serranía de Ronda leaves a lasting impression.

Grab your hiking boots and get ready for an adventure in Faraján’s Chorrera de Balastar. Your next great outdoor experience awaits.
