The Palacio Abacial in Alcalá la Real isn’t your average museum. It’s part mineral exhibit, part postcard gallery, part industrial tribute—with a touch of Roman mythology thrown in. The building itself has lived many lives, and that history shows in every corner.

Centro Antonio Reyna Manescau in Coín: A tribute to a master painter
In the Andalusian town of Coín (Málaga), you'll find the Centro Antonio Reyna Manescau. This cultural space honours the legacy of the painter Antonio Reyna Manescau (1859–1937). The centre opened its doors on 29 November 2019. It’s a project by the Fundación García Agüera in partnership with the local government. You’ll walk into history, as it sits in the former Santa María de la Encarnación convent, just steps away from where the artist grew up.
A permanent exhibition with a personal touch
The main attraction is the exhibition “Íntimo y Universal,” curated by José Manuel García Agüera. It includes original works by the artist from public and private collections. Paintings from the municipality of Coín, the Málaga Provincial Council, and the García Agüera Foundation are on display. You'll also find personal items, historical documents, and publications. Together, they paint a complete picture of Reyna Manescau’s life and career.
Art in a unique setting
The building itself adds to the experience. Visitors enter through a quiet courtyard that leads to the exhibition halls. Inside, the space is filled with oil paintings, sketches, old photographs and research material. Each room helps you understand how Reyna Manescau developed his style and left his mark on Spanish art.
The star piece: “Un rancho en Andalucía”
One painting draws the most attention: “Un rancho en Andalucía.” It shows a traditional Andalusian farmhouse and was sketched in Coín in the summer of 1910. Right next to it, you’ll see the original oil sketch and the painter’s own palette. Both belong to the town of Coín and are displayed with pride.
Plan your visit
The Centro Antonio Reyna Manescau is open to the public. It’s a must for anyone interested in art or the history of the region. Whether you're a casual visitor or a lifelong art lover, the rich collection and peaceful atmosphere make it a memorable stop.
