Castillo del Moral de Lucena: Medieval Walls with a Story to Tell

Castillo del Moral-Lucena

Right in the center of Lucena, in the province of Córdoba, stands the Castillo del Moral. This medieval fortress is more than just stone and towers. It’s a recognized heritage site with layers of history that date back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

A fortress shaped by time

The oldest part of the castle was likely built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It has a square layout, with towers on each corner. One of the standout features is the Torre del Moral. This octagonal tower is topped with baroque details and bears a coat of arms. Another key highlight is the Tribute Tower. According to local tradition, it held Boabdil "El Chico", the last Nasrid king, after he was captured in 1483.

From stronghold to stately home

In the 16th century, the fortress took on a new role. It became a noble residence for the Marquises of Comares. Later, it became known as the Palace and Castle of the Medinaceli. Today, it serves a different purpose altogether. The castle now houses the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum of Lucena.

A museum full of milestones

The museum gives a clear view of how life, culture, and the city itself evolved over time. From prehistoric finds to modern-day Lucena, the exhibitions cover a broad timeline. It’s also home to the tourist information center, where visitors can learn more about the region’s past and present.
