Casa Palacio de la Joya: A mini palace with royal flair in Torrox Pueblo (Málaga)
The Casa de la Joya stands right in the middle of Torrox Pueblo, province of Málaga, the white mountain village above the coast. This 19th-century palace was once home to the wealthy Medina family and even hosted royalty. Today it houses the courthouse and cultural center, but the grandeur from back then still lingers.
From wine trade to prosperous palace
The Medina family (also known as Sevilla) made serious money exporting wine and dried fruit. They built this stunning property, though the exact construction date remains unclear. An inscription mentions 1864, but the building is probably older. The architecture radiates 19th-century class either way.
King Alfonso XII actually slept here
In 1884, a devastating earthquake hit the region. King Alfonso XII came to assess the situation and stayed at the Casa de la Joya during his visit. Pretty remarkable that this building gained extra significance through such a historic moment. Since then, it's also been called Palacio de la Joya or Palacio de la Hoya.
Gardens you'll also find in Malaga
The gardens surrounding the palace were designed by the same landscape architect who created Malaga's famous park. You can tell from the careful layout and atmospheric design. That combination of architecture and greenery makes this spot extra photogenic.
Cultural center with a judicial twist
The building now serves as both Juzgado (courthouse) and Casa de la Cultura. So while court cases are being heard in one section, cultural activities take place in another. Exhibitions, lectures, workshops – Torrox's cultural life thrives at this historic location.
Right in the white village
You'll find the Casa de la Joya in the center of Torrox Pueblo, the traditional mountain village with white houses. Note: this isn't Torrox Costa on the coast, but the authentic village in the hills. Walk casually into the center and you'll stumble upon this monumental building.
