Arroyo de la Miel: sunny village life near the sea

Arroyo de la Miel sits between the beaches of the Costa del Sol and the green hills of southern Spain. It’s part of Benalmádena, together with the coastal Benalmádena Costa and the mountain village Benalmádena Pueblo. This town blends classic Andalusian charm with all the modern comforts you could ask for.
A name with a sweet backstory
The name means “stream of honey.” That’s not poetic flair—there were once many beehives here. The area has roots that go back over 35,000 years, with ancient cave paintings in nearby Cueva del Toro. But the town itself started to grow in the 18th century, around a large estate with paper mills and farmland.
Ride to the top with the Teleférico
Want to see the Costa del Sol from above? Hop on the Teleférico. This cable car takes you up Mount Calamorro. At the top, you get panoramic views of the coastline, the sea, and the Sierra mountains. It’s a great pick for walkers, photographers, or anyone who likes their sightseeing with a breeze.
Shops, tapas, and late-night strolls
The center of Arroyo de la Miel is full of life. Think cafés, boutiques, local bars, and family-run restaurants. In the evening, the streets buzz with activity. Whether you're chasing the perfect paella or just window shopping, this is where locals and travelers mix.
Beach time within easy reach
Need sand between your toes? Playa Santa Ana and other beaches in Benalmádena are only minutes away. Want more options? The wide, clean beaches of Torremolinos are just around the corner. Bring a towel and try the local espetos or rent a paddleboard.
Friday is market day
Every Friday morning, the market near Tivoli World opens up. Browse stalls full of fruit, spices, crafts, and handmade goods. Looking for souvenirs? This is where you’ll find them. It’s also a fun way to soak up the local atmosphere and maybe even practise your Spanish.
Easy to reach from Málaga
Arroyo de la Miel is about 20 kilometers from Málaga. You can get there by car, bus, or train in under 30 minutes. It’s also close to Torremolinos, making it an ideal stop during a Costa del Sol trip.
Why go here?
You get a mix of sea, mountains, history, and fun. Spend the morning on a mountain, the afternoon at the beach, and the evening at a tapas bar. Arroyo de la Miel gives you the Costa del Sol at its most relaxed, with just the right amount of buzz.
