Villafranca de Córdoba is just a 15-minute drive from the city of Córdoba. The village sits in the Guadalquivir Valley and offers a mix of green riverbanks, farmland and the mountains of Sierra Morena. A surprising blend of scenery that feels miles away from the city – but isn’t.

Alminar Mudéjar de Árchez: a unique tower in the Axarquía
In the white village of Árchez (Málaga), a 14th-century minaret rises above the rooftops. The Alminar Mudéjar de Árchez once called to prayer. Today, it forms part of the church tower. A silent witness to the region’s Moorish past.
A piece of Nasrid history
This red-brick tower is 15 metres high and square in shape. It’s the only remaining Nasrid structure in Árchez. What makes it special? Its beautiful brickwork, geometric patterns and stylised plant motifs. These designs symbolise the tree of life — a classic theme in Islamic art.
Look closely and you'll see mysterious black figures painted on the surface. No one knows what they mean. But that’s part of the charm.
From minaret to bell tower
The minaret was originally part of the village mosque. After the Reconquista, it was converted into a bell tower for the new church: Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. One building, two religions. That’s typical for this part of Andalusia, where cultures and histories mix.
The legend of the lizard
There’s more than just history here. One bell is said to hold a secret. According to legend, a lizard fell into the molten bronze while the bell was being cast. Its shape was forever sealed inside. The bell still has an inscription from 1876.
Locals believe that if you’re unlucky in love, you should kiss the lizard's silhouette. Some find their match right after. Others need to try again. Either way, it makes for a good story.
Plan your visit
The tower is in great condition and open to visitors. Want to see it up close? Contact the Árchez town hall to arrange a tour. You'll walk through centuries of architecture, art and Andalusian folklore.
