A 16th-century Quran uncovered in Cútar during renovation

Something special happened in the small village of Cútar. During the renovation of a traditional home, builders found something unexpected: a well-preserved 16th-century Quran. This rare find sheds new light on the deep and layered history of this Andalusian village.

A hidden treasure behind the walls

Builder Miguel Lozano Ruiz and his son were restoring an old house. What started as a routine job quickly turned into an archaeological surprise. Tucked away behind layers of plaster and stone, they discovered a centuries-old Quran. Despite its age, the manuscript is in remarkable condition. And it comes with questions. Who owned it? How did it end up there?

A village with a long memory

Cútar already looks like it came straight out of a history book. Narrow streets, a pointy castle, and whitewashed walls tell stories of the past. But this discovery adds something new. The 16th century was a time of cultural mix and religious shifts in Spain. The presence of this Quran hints at a diverse community, shaped by both Islamic and Christian influences.

Protecting the past, one page at a time

Since the find, local efforts to preserve the Quran have picked up speed. Historians, volunteers, and government officials are working together. The goal: to conserve the physical pages and the stories they hold. Restoration work has already begun, and the manuscript will soon be part of Cútar’s cultural archives.

More than just a book

This isn’t just a historical object. It’s a symbol. A symbol of a time when different cultures lived side by side. The Quran adds a new layer to the identity of Cútar and the Axarquía region. It’s proof of the area’s rich and mixed heritage—and it’s got people talking.

A whole village gets involved

Locals are jumping in. Exhibitions are being planned. Lectures and school visits are on the calendar. People want to learn more—and share what they learn. The Quran has sparked something: a fresh wave of curiosity and pride in the town’s roots.

One more reason to visit Cútar

With its sharp castle towers, Moorish fountains, and now a medieval Quran, Cútar has something special going on. The village’s story just got more interesting. And if you’re into history, this little town in Axarquía deserves a spot on your list.
