In the quiet town of Cañete de las Torres, in the province of Córdoba, stands a castle that’s seen centuries pass by. While much of it has blended into the modern town, a few towers still stand tall.

San Nicolás del Puerto: peace, nature and history in the Sierra Norte
In the north of the province of Seville lies San Nicolás del Puerto – a small mountain village tucked away in the Sierra Norte Natural Park. Surrounded by rolling meadows, oak forests and gently flowing rivers, this is where chestnut trees and cork oaks take turns shading the winding paths, and where spotting a deer or wild boar is just part of the scenery. Life here moves at a relaxed pace – no rush, just atmosphere.
Iporci, Romans and an old fortress
San Nicolás has been around for a while. Once known as Iporci, it started as a Celtic settlement before becoming Roman. The village’s hilltop location wasn’t by chance – it offered a strategic view of the surroundings. The Romans even built a road from here to Mérida. During the Al-Andalus period, silver was mined in the nearby mountains, and the old fortress from that era still stands today. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the village gained its own municipal government and shook off the remnants of feudal rule.
Festivities with character
From solemn processions to joyful celebrations – San Nicolás del Puerto knows how to keep traditions alive. The village’s patron saint, San Sebastián, is honoured every year, but harvest and livestock festivals also have their place. Artisan markets, live music and food events ensure you go home not just with photos, but with real memories.
What not to miss
The Church of San Sebastián rises modestly above the whitewashed houses. Small, but full of charm. Just outside the village, the Huéznar River flows through forests and rock formations that look almost too perfect to be real. Then there’s the Cerro del Hierro – a jagged limestone formation that resembles a film set more than a natural wonder. Ideal for a long hike or a bit of climbing, if you’re up for it.
Peacefully remote, but easy to reach
San Nicolás is easily accessible by car and even reachable by public transport. Once you’re here, you’ll find a selection of cosy hostels, rural hotels and welcoming B&Bs. Local restaurants serve up dishes made with ingredients from just around the corner – think hearty stews, grilled meats and fresh seasonal vegetables. If you love the outdoors, you’ll feel right at home: hiking, cycling, birdwatching or just sitting under a tree with a good book. Nothing is a must, but everything is possible.
