Plaza San Juan de Dios: the Vibrant Square of Cádiz
Plaza de San Juan de Dios, formerly known as La Corredera, served for centuries as the central hub of urban activities in Cádiz. Although it was located outside the original city walls, near the then Puerta del Mar (now the Arco de la Pópulo), the square played a vital role in the daily life of the city. Its location by a former sea inlet gave it an irregular layout that is still visible today.
An Important Hub in the 16th Century
In the 16th century, Plaza de San Juan de Dios became an important hub, thanks in part to the nearby port. The town hall stood at its center, while trade with the Americas created a lively marketplace. Exotic products from the New World found their way to the inhabitants of Cádiz here. By the end of the 18th century, the square changed character again with the establishment of permanent market stalls, allowing the area to remain a key commercial center until the Central Market opened its doors.
Highlights Not to Miss at Plaza de San Juan de Dios
The square is home to some impressive buildings. The neoclassical town hall is a real eye-catcher. The Church of San Juan de Dios and the Casa de los Pazos Miranda also contribute to the unique atmosphere of the square. Each building tells a part of Cádiz’s rich history.
A Modern Square with Respect for the Past
In 2012, Plaza de San Juan de Dios underwent a thorough renovation. The entire space was made car-free, allowing pedestrians to stroll freely and enjoy the surroundings. New decorative elements gave the square a fresh look without losing its historical charm. A special highlight is the statue of Sigismundo Moret, an influential politician from Cádiz. The monument, which has stood on the square since 1909, was given a prominent place during the renovation.
