Málaga to Get Spain’s Largest Planetarium

The city of Málaga is making a major leap in the fields of science and technology. The building permit is approved: Spain’s largest planetarium will be constructed opposite Benítez Park. And this isn’t just any project—it will also be one of the largest planetariums in Europe. The construction is being led by UTE Málaga Planetarium, which secured a 37-year lease on the site through a public tender.

Room for 432 Visitors Under an Impressive Dome

The main hall of the planetarium will have a diameter of 27 meters and can accommodate 432 people at once, making it the largest of its kind in Spain. There will also be 116 parking spaces for visitors. The investment? Over 5.3 million euros, excluding VAT. Construction is expected to take twelve months—a short timeline, but with attention to detail.

A Strategically Chosen and Accessible Location

The location is anything but random. Positioned close to the city center and easily accessible to both residents and tourists, the planetarium will be more than just a building. It’s set to become an educational and cultural hub, offering programs for schools, families, and anyone interested in stars, planets, and the universe.

Technology, Timing, and Teamwork

Building a project of this scale is no easy feat. Technical execution requires precision, and financing must be perfectly organized. That’s why there will be close collaboration with experts, suppliers, and other stakeholders. The goal? A planetarium that makes an impression from day one and stands the test of time.

New Jobs and Increased Economic Activity

Beyond its educational value, the project also brings economic benefits. Think job creation during construction and afterward—from technicians and educators to hospitality and maintenance roles. Local businesses stand to gain from the increase in visitors. A definite boost for the region.

Tips

Tip: Visit the Pablo Picasso Museum and Casa Natal on a Tour of Málaga

Experience Málaga through the lens of Pablo Picasso. Explore key sites linked to his life and see how the city influenced his work. Enjoy highlights of the city on a guided walk.

To avoid long lines and ensure availability, it's wise to book tickets in advance for popular attractions. For instance, the Alhambra in Granada and Caminito del Rey have limited visitor numbers, so it's best to reserve a few months ahead.

Málaga

More Than Just a Dome

Málaga’s new planetarium will be a true eye-catcher. But it’s about more than architecture. It will be a place where science comes to life, where curiosity is sparked, and where young and old can journey through the universe—without ever leaving Málaga.
