Ojén: A White Village Amidst Mountains and History

Ojén is nestled between the Sierra Alpujata and the Sierra Blanca, just a short distance from Marbella. This white village is surrounded by greenery and has a rich history dating back to the Arab-Andalusian period. The houses are built into the hillside, creating narrow streets and charming squares.

A Village with a Story

The name Ojén comes from the Arabic Oxen or Hoxán, meaning "steep place." In the 10th century, the village was a battleground between Abderramán III and the muladíes led by Omar Ben Hafsun. After being reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs, Ojén was temporarily abandoned but later repopulated by settlers from La Roda de Andalucía.

Festivals and Traditions

Ojén is known for its vibrant festivals. In July, the Virgen del Carmen celebration takes place, while in August, the Feria de Ojén transforms the village into a lively festival ground. These events bring locals and visitors together for music, dance, and culinary traditions.

Attractions in Ojén

The village boasts several historical and natural landmarks:

  • Castillo de Solís: Remains of an ancient castle with panoramic views.

  • Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación: A Mudejar-style church reflecting Ojén’s historical character.

  • Juanar Valley: A nature reserve with hiking trails and viewpoints, perfect for an active outdoor day.

Accessibility and Atmosphere

Ojén is easily accessible from Marbella and other Andalusian cities by car and public transport. Visitors can expect a welcoming atmosphere in a place where nature and tradition come together. An ideal destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast.
