Right in the center of Chipiona, province of Cádiz, you'll find a remarkable building with a rich history. The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Regla started out as a sturdy castle belonging to the noble Ponce de León family. What's now a lively pilgrimage site used to be a strategic fortress. In 1399, Don Pedro III Ponce de León, fourth lord of Marchena and first Count of Arcos, donated the castle to the Augustinian monks. They converted it into a church to honor the Virgin Mary.
