Museum of the City of Antequera: Where History and Innovation Meet

From Humble Beginnings to a Cultural Icon

The Museum of the City of Antequera was founded in 1908 as the "Municipal Archaeological Museum", initiated by archaeologist Rodrigo Amador de los Ríos. The first collection was housed in the halls of the Town Hall, adjacent to the Iglesia de los Remedios. Over more than fifty years, the collection expanded into an impressive array of historical artifacts, primarily from the Roman period.

Expansion and Innovation: A Museum for the Future

Recent expansions and renovations have transformed the Museum of the City of Antequera into one of the leading municipal museums in Andalusia. With an investment of nearly five million euros, funded by the Municipality of Antequera and the Junta de Andalucía, the museum has been modernized and equipped with new facilities.

More Than Just Exhibitions

The museum offers much more than just historical exhibits. Visitors can enjoy a shop, which also serves as an information center and ticket office, an event hall for audiovisual presentations, restoration workshops, and a temporary exhibitions department. Additionally, the museum features twenty permanent exhibition halls, narrating the history of Antequera from prehistory to the present day.

Access and Opening Hours: Plenty of Time to Visit

The museum offers generous opening hours, allowing visitors ample time to explore:

  • Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

  • Sundays and public holidays: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

  • Monday: Closed

Why a Visit is Worth It

The Museum of the City of Antequera is not just a captivating journey through history; it also provides modern amenities for an enjoyable visitor experience. The combination of an extensive collection, interactive presentations, and educational programs makes it an ideal destination for both locals and tourists.

A Museum That Moves with the Times

While many museums focus solely on the past, the Museum of the City of Antequera builds a bridge to the future. Through innovative restorations and new technologies, history is presented in an engaging and accessible way. The museum proves that heritage and modernity can go hand in hand.

With its diverse offerings and revitalized infrastructure, the Museum of the City of Antequera is a cultural hotspot in Andalusia—an inspiring place where history is not just preserved but truly comes to life.
