Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla: A Journey Through History

The Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla houses an extensive collection of archaeological finds that bring the region’s history to life. From prehistoric artifacts to Roman artworks and medieval objects, the museum provides visitors with a comprehensive view of the various civilizations that have inhabited Andalusia over the centuries.

Origins and Development

The collection of antiquities in Seville began at the end of the 19th century, with a strong focus on discoveries from the Roman city of Itálica. As the collection expanded, it was eventually housed in the Pabellón de Bellas Artes, a building designed by Aníbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929.

Museum Layout

The museum spans three floors, each dedicated to a specific historical period:

  • Basement: Prehistory and protohistory of Andalusia, featuring objects from the Bronze Age and early civilizations.

  • Ground Floor: Roman era, Late Antiquity, and the Middle Ages, with a strong emphasis on archaeological finds from Itálica.

  • Upper Floor: Exhibition spaces and facilities for research and education.

Key Collections

The museum boasts a wide range of artifacts, including:

  • Prehistoric and protohistoric finds, featuring objects from the late Bronze Age.

  • Roman art and everyday objects, originating from Itálica and other archaeological sites.

  • Visigothic and Islamic artifacts, illustrating the cultural transitions in the region.

  • Tesoro del Carambolo, an impressive collection of gold pieces from the Tartessian civilization.

Research and Education

Beyond its permanent collections, the museum offers:

  • A library with archaeological and historical works.

  • Spaces for temporary exhibitions and cultural events.

  • An auditorium for lectures and educational programs.

  • Workspaces dedicated to research and artifact restoration.
