A Place with a Long History

This site has been used for religious worship since ancient times. During the Visigothic period, it was home to the Basilica of San Vicente. After a partial sale, the original mosque was built on the same site. For a time, Christians and Muslims shared the building until Abd al-Rahman I took full control and began constructing the Alhama Mosque. Remnants of the Visigothic structure can still be seen in the first section of the mosque.

Two Distinct Sections

The Mezquita-Catedral consists of two clearly defined areas. The first is the courtyard (sahn), where the minaret, later converted into a Renaissance-style bell tower, stands. The second is the prayer hall (haram), featuring an impressive array of columns and two-toned arches that create a unique visual effect. The building was expanded in multiple phases, resulting in a fascinating architectural layering.

From Mosque to Cathedral

Although the original structure started as a Visigothic basilica and later became an Islamic mosque, the building underwent another transformation after the Christian Reconquista. A cathedral was built in the heart of the mosque, merging Islamic and Christian architectural elements. This blend of styles provides a remarkable reflection of Córdoba’s history.

How to Get to the Mezquita-Catedral

Located in Córdoba’s historic center, the Mezquita-Catedral is easy to reach. The narrow streets and charming squares surrounding the monument create a special approach to the entrance. With multiple access points, the site is well-organized and visitor-friendly.
