Lucainena de las Torres: A Village with Character

Lucainena de las Torres is nestled in the Sierra Alhamilla and is part of the Sierra de Filabres comarca. The village has a long history dating back to the era of Al-Andalus. For centuries, its fertile land was used for grape cultivation and other crops, giving the region an agricultural identity.

A Name with a Story

The name Lucainena de las Torres carries historical significance. It was once known as Lucainena de las Siete Torres, referring to a fortress that once protected the village. The name’s origin is possibly Iberian or Hispano-Roman. The castle that once stood here served as a strategic defense point for travelers moving between the coast and the interior.

From Moorish Rule to Christian Resettlement

During the Al-Andalus period, Lucainena was part of the Tierra de Níjar. After the Christian Reconquista, the Catholic Monarchs granted the area to Don Enrique Enríquez. Following the Morisco rebellion between 1568 and 1570, the village was temporarily abandoned. Later, under King Philip II, resettlement took place, marking a new phase for Lucainena.

Growth and Change Through the Centuries

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the village structure changed with the construction of a new church on the site of a former mosque. By the 18th century, the village had 429 inhabitants, as recorded in the Catastro de Ensenada. The 19th century brought independence and economic prosperity, driven in part by the rise of mining. Around 1900, the population grew to 2,455 inhabitants.

Traditions and Heritage

Lucainena is known for its local customs. A notable tradition is the throwing of bread rings during the festival of San Sebastián on January 20th. Additionally, the village has natural iron-rich springs, which contribute to the region’s unique heritage.
