Las Setas de Sevilla: Modern Architecture with a View
Seville is known for its historic charm, but among all those classical buildings stands a modern eye-catcher: Las Setas. This massive wooden structure, also known as Metropol Parasol, is not only a work of art but also offers a unique panoramic view of the city.
From Market Square to Architectural Icon
Plaza de la Encarnación was once the beating heart of the local market. Since 1832, fresh produce was traded here until the old market had to make way in 1973. What followed was decades of emptiness until Seville decided to give the square a new purpose.
The Construction of Las Setas
In 2004, a design competition was held, and the ambitious plan of German architect Jürgen Mayer emerged as the winner. His vision? A wave-like wooden structure covering the square, with space for a market, a museum, and a panoramic rooftop terrace. Construction began in 2006, and after some technical challenges, Las Setas was officially inaugurated in 2011.
Why Wood?
The choice of wood as a building material makes Las Setas unique. Measuring 150 by 70 meters and standing 28.5 meters tall, it is one of the largest wooden structures in the world. Sustainable, lightweight, and striking—exactly what Seville needed to breathe new life into the square.
