Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación: A Historic Masterpiece

A Church with a Rich History

The Iglesia, located in Plaza Baja de la Despedía, is an impressive 17th-century structure. Along with the Castillo Árabe, it forms an iconic duo within the village. This church is one of the largest in the diocese, second in size only to the Cathedral of Málaga.

Plaza Baja de la Despedía

From Mosque to Parish Church

The original church was built on top of the former mosque of the castle. As the population grew and the village expanded, the need arose for a larger and better-positioned church building. The chosen location was Plaza Baja de la Despedía, where construction took place between 1600 and 1699. This lengthy process resulted in an impressive piece of architectural heritage.

Architectural Features

The church features a rectangular floor plan with three naves, separated by solid Tuscan columns. The semi-circular arches, adorned with decorative twists, are decorated with paintings of the apostles, giving the interior a majestic appearance and highlighting the artistic value of the building.

Art and Sculptures

Inside the church, three remarkable sculptures stand out:

  • A masterpiece by Navas Parejo: the crucified Christ on the main altar.
  • An anonymous 17th-century Dolorosa in the Epistle nave.
  • A polychrome wooden statue of Saint Francis of Assisi in the Gospel nave.

Additionally, the church houses impressive paintings, including the Descendimiento de la Cruz (Descent from the Cross) and a representation of Purgatory on the main altar. The side aisles feature works such as the Immaculate Conception, the Crucifixion, and a painting of Saint Ildephonsus.

A Central Landmark

The church plays an important role in village life, forming a historical ensemble with the Castillo Árabe. The Plaza Baja de la Despedía enhances the significance of this religious and cultural monument.
