Classical Layout with Moorish Influences

The church's floor plan follows the model of the Moorish church in Granada. It consists of a single nave with a clearly defined chancel and six independent side chapels. In the 18th century, the chapel of the Brotherhood of Soledad was added at the foot of the church. The space is dominated by Mudéjar woodwork from 1614, which remains fully visible due to the absence of wooden support beams.

An Impressive Chancel

The chancel takes the form of a rectangular prism and is crowned with a hemispherical dome, giving it a grand appearance. Three large altarpieces draw attention, with the most remarkable being the central Baroque altarpiece from before 1747. Its detailed columns, niches, and sculpted drapery reflect the grandeur of the Carmelite tradition.

The Altarpiece as a Visual Highlight

The altarpiece serves as a tribute to the Carmelite Order. Saints and angels with musical instruments frame the central sanctuary, where the image of the Virgin of Carmel is preserved. The mixtilinear design of the sanctuary, combined with its lavish decorations, contrasts with the simplicity of the stucco work, creating a harmonious ensemble.

Two Impressive Side Altars

Flanking the main altarpiece are two side altars, likely from a later period. One is dedicated to Saint Elijah, while the other features a distinctive Rococo style. In the chancel’s arch, a pulpit from 1799 seamlessly integrates with the church’s Baroque elements.

Six Chapels Filled with Art and History

Along the nave, six chapels open up, each showcasing unique artworks. The Soledad Chapel, dating back to the early 18th century, houses a stunning altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin of Soledad. Additionally, a modern niche contains the original image of the Virgin del Socorro. This late 15th-century statue, donated by the Catholic Monarchs, holds significant historical value.
