Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro: A Historic Monument in Casabermeja

A Church with Centuries of History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro has a history dating back to the 16th century. In the 18th century, the church was expanded, becoming one of the largest rural churches in the province. During this period, Casabermeja developed into a prosperous community with more than 5,000 inhabitants, largely thanks to the flourishing wine industry.

Times of Destruction and Restoration

Over the centuries, the church has faced various challenges. During the Spanish Civil War, parts of the interior were damaged, including artworks and statues that were lost in the flames. Beyond its religious function, the church has also served as a gathering place for municipal meetings. Restoration efforts in 1976 and recent renovations to the walls and sides have helped preserve the building, though work on the flooring is still ongoing.

An Impressive Altarpiece

The church follows a Latin cross layout with three naves. Its striking altarpiece features Our Lady of Perpetual Help at its center. On either side of the transept are chapels dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Jesus the Nazarene, who is carried through the streets on Good Friday.

Inside, the old wooden doors with their artistic details catch the eye. Paintings from the 18th century, despite their dark tones, depict religious scenes created by various anonymous artists. Beneath the epistle nave, there is a crypt housing a statue of the Virgin of Sorrows and a crucifix from the early 20th century.

A Distinctive Façade and Tower

The church’s exterior reflects its internal structure, with three clearly separated naves. The five-story tower to the left of the main altar, built from red brick, houses bells that not only mark the time but also signal significant events.
