Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario: A Historic Icon in Alcaucín
A Church with History
The Iglesia Ntra. Sra. del Rosario in Alcaucín stands on Plaza de la Constitución and has a long history. Founded on April 21, 1732, during the episcopacy of Don Diego González de Toro, this church features a simple yet impressive architectural style. The building consists of two naves, separated by pillars resting on three semicircular arches.
The Rococo Altar
The Rococo-style altar is a striking feature within the church. An arch adorned with a garland of shells and flowers leads to a small chamber, while the decorated pilasters at the corners enhance its refined appearance. The vaulted ceiling features ribs converging in a rosette, surrounded by flowers and shells framing symbols of the Passion. Although the current woodwork has been restored, historical images reveal that the original craftsmanship featured elaborate patterns.
Unique Religious Statues
Inside the church, several remarkable religious statues can be admired. These include the Virgen de los Dolores, a 19th-century Nazareno, and an 18th-century Immaculate Conception with the Child Jesus. These artworks play a significant role in the religious and cultural identity of the church.
Architectural Features
Following a restoration in 1945, the church received a renewed entrance. The doorway features a semicircular arch, accentuated by pilasters on both sides. A frieze with moldings leads to a divided pediment. The bell tower, with two semicircular arches and pilasters in between, is crowned by a triangular pediment with a central rose window. These elements give the church a unique appearance, combining simplicity with elegance.
Restoration and Preservation
Thanks to careful restorations, the church has retained its original splendor. Details such as the altar decorations and the historic wooden framework have been meticulously restored. This makes the Iglesia Ntra. Sra. del Rosario not only a place of worship but also a valuable cultural heritage site. Behind its modest façade lies an interior filled with art and history, making the church a special landmark in Alcaucín.
