Iglesia De Los Santos Mártires in Málaga: A Historical Icon

A Church with a Story

In the heart of Málaga stands the Iglesia De Los Santos Mártires, a monument with a rich history dating back to 1494. The church was built in honor of the city's patron saints, San Ciriaco and Santa Paula. Today, it is home to five brotherhoods that play a central role in the Semana Santa processions, making it one of the most significant religious sites in Málaga.

Gothic-Mudéjar Architecture with a Turbulent Past

The church's architectural style blends Gothic and Moorish influences, resulting in a unique Gothic-Mudéjar design. Over the centuries, however, the building has suffered multiple damages and restorations. In 1854, it was hit by a cannonball, the 1884 earthquake left visible cracks, and during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the church was looted and temporarily used as a workshop.

From Restoration to Rococo Splendor

To preserve its historical value, the church underwent restorations in 1945 and 2006. During these renovations, the interior was given a new artistic expression, enriching its original Gothic-Mudéjar character with Rococo elements. The refined decorations and intricate embellishments make this church one of the most impressive religious buildings in Málaga today.

Religious Art and the Neobaroque Altarpiece

Inside the church, the Neobaroque altarpiece by sculptor Pérez Hidalgo immediately captures attention. This masterpiece is a stunning example of the opulent religious art that adorns the church. The combination of sculptures, paintings, and ornaments reflects the artistic and spiritual heritage of the city.

Sunscreen is the new chic

The sun on the Costa del Sol doesn’t play nice. While you think you're just soaking up the rays, your skin is already in panic mode. And honestly? It's not winning that battle without help. UV rays here are way more intense than back in Belgium or the Netherlands. One unprotected afternoon on the beach and you’ll be rocking the lobster look. Not exactly this season’s trend.
