La Iglesia de la Magdalena in Jaén: A Historic Landmark
One of the Oldest Churches in Jaén
La Iglesia de la Magdalena in Jaén is one of the oldest churches in the city. Its origins date back to the time of Abderramán II (825), who had a mosque built on this site. Elements from that period, such as the courtyard and the minaret, are still visible today, offering a glimpse into the centuries-long history of this location.
Gothic Architecture with Unique Details
The church is built in Gothic style and features four naves, one of which is wider than the others. Pointed arches connect the irregularly placed pillars, while the vaulted ceiling is adorned with ribs in the shape of lizards. This detail alludes to an old local legend about the ‘raudal’ (abundant stream), which is also reflected in the consoles above the capitals.
Artworks of Historical Value
Inside, the church houses several remarkable artworks. The polychrome sculptures of Calvary are attributed to Jacobo Florentino or Jerónimo Quijano. Other highlights include the statue of Cristo de la Clemencia, created by Salvador de Cuéllar in 1593, and La Magdalena Arrodillada, crafted by Mateo Medina in 1572. Although some Christian paintings have not been well preserved, the artistic value of the church remains impressive. The double door of the main portal, commissioned by Bishop Diego Tavera in 1555, continues to stand out despite the passage of time.
The Raudal de la Magdalena: A Historic Water Source
Near the church lies the Raudal de la Magdalena, a water source that has been in use since Roman times. This site plays a significant role in the legend of the ‘Lagarto de Jaén,’ a popular folk tale that captures the imagination. A visit to this water source adds an extra historical dimension to the experience.
A Destination Full of History
La Iglesia de la Magdalena reflects the rich history of Jaén. From its origins as a mosque in the time of Abderramán II to its transformation into a Gothic church adorned with valuable artworks, this site stands as a significant witness to the city’s cultural development.
Between Past and Present
Though the church has withstood centuries, some artworks and paintings have deteriorated over time. However, its architecture remains impressive, and it continues to be a site of great historical significance.
