Guadix: A City with an Ancient History

One of the Oldest Settlements in Spain

Located at a natural passage between Levante and Andalusia, Guadix is one of the oldest human settlements in Spain. The city has a rich history dating back to the Phoenician and Carthaginian periods and has been shaped over the centuries by various civilizations.

Living in Caves

Guadix is renowned for its well-developed troglodyte habitat. The distinctive cave dwellings can be found in neighborhoods such as Ermitas and Cuevas. Notable sites here include the New Chapel with the cave of Father Poveda and the Cave Museum of Folk Art and Traditions, which showcases traditional crafts and industries from the region. Nearby, the Magdalena viewpoint offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.

Historical and Artistic Heritage

Guadix boasts a rich historical and artistic heritage. The Alcazaba, an impressive Moorish fortress from the 11th century, is one of its most striking landmarks. From its towers, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the valley, the city, and the Sierra Nevada.

Religious architecture plays a prominent role in Guadix. The cathedral is a masterpiece that blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Other remarkable buildings include the churches of Santa Ana, Santo Domingo, and San Francisco.

A City Shaped by Centuries of History

In ancient times, Guadix was known as Acci and became an important Roman colony under the name Julia Gemella Acci. It was one of the first Christian dioceses in Spain. Under Islamic rule, the city developed an Arabic urban structure, still visible in some streets today. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Wadi Acci flourished as a kingdom within al-Andalus before coming under the rule of the Catholic Monarchs in the 15th century.

In 1833, the writer Pedro Antonio de Alarcón was born in Guadix. Two of his most famous works, El niño de la Bola and El sombrero de tres picos, are closely linked to the city.

Festivals and Events

Throughout the year, Guadix celebrates its heritage with various festivals and events. These festivities reflect the diverse influences of Roman, Moorish, and Catholic rule, bringing the region’s traditions to life.

Attractions and Accessibility

Beyond the Alcazaba and the cathedral, numerous historical buildings and museums tell the story of the city. Guadix is easily accessible and serves as a perfect base for exploring Andalusia. The surrounding landscapes create a stunning backdrop that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
