Dolmen de Menga and the Prehistoric Monuments of Antequera

A Glimpse into Prehistory

The Dolmen de Menga is an impressive remnant from the Copper Age. This monument, along with the Viera and El Romeral dolmens, is part of one of the most important megalithic complexes in Spain. The Dolmen de Menga dates back to approximately 2500 BC and consists of gigantic stone slabs forming a long corridor and a central chamber.

The Romeral Dolmen: A Unique Structure

The Romeral Dolmen is the youngest of the three, dating to around 1800 BC. This structure features a large oval chamber with a covered gallery and a narrow entrance. What makes this dolmen particularly remarkable is the presence of an inscription with anthropomorphic figures on one of the stones near the entrance. Additionally, the capstone at the end of the structure is noteworthy due to its enormous size: 6 meters long, 7 meters wide, and an estimated weight of 180 tons.

Practical Information on Access and Visits

The Dolmen de Menga and the other monuments are part of the Antequera Dolmens Archaeological Site. Visitors can explore this location for free, but for a more complete experience, booking a guided tour is highly recommended. A guide provides additional insights and historical context, making the visit even more fascinating.

Plan Your Visit

A visit to the Antequera dolmens offers a unique opportunity to witness a piece of prehistory up close. Free entry makes it easily accessible, while a guided tour provides deeper understanding. Take your time to admire these impressive structures and discover how humans built monuments thousands of years ago that still stand today.
