The Convento de Hermanos Menores Capuchinos in Casares: A Place with a Rich History
The Convento de Hermanos Menores Capuchinos in Casares is a historic monastery that radiates simplicity and spirituality. Founded in 1731 with the permission of the church and the Duke of Arcos, the monastery played a significant role in the region.
A Monastery with a Tumultuous Past
During the Guerra de la Independencia (1810-1812), the monks were not only devoted religious figures but also active defenders of Casares. They participated in battles near the castle and organized guerrilla units. In recognition of their efforts, San Francisco de Asís and Nuestra Sra. Virgen del Rosario del Campo were named the new patron saints of Casares.
The Influence of the Carlist Uprising
In 1835, the Capuchin monastery sided with the Carlist uprising in Andalusia by providing food and supplies. However, this led to significant consequences. The monks were expelled, and their possessions were confiscated. Only the church remained, while the rest of the monastery disappeared due to the sale of its properties under the Decreto y Reglamento de venta de los bienes inmuebles del convento.
From Spiritual Retreat to Stronghold of Defense
What began as a place of peace and reflection gradually transformed into a strategic defense point for Casares. The monks served not only their faith but also their community. Their contributions to the town’s protection remain an essential part of local history.
The Monastery’s Legacy
After the expropriation in 1835, only the church stood as a reminder of what was once a thriving monastery. The Capuchins disappeared from Casares, but their influence endured. The designation of San Francisco de Asís and Nuestra Sra. Virgen del Rosario del Campo as patron saints is a lasting recognition of their importance to the town.
A Lasting Memory
Although the monastery itself no longer exists, its history lives on. The remaining church stands as a symbol of a time when faith, community, and struggle were intertwined. The Convento de Capuchinos remains an important chapter in the cultural heritage of Casares.
