Castillo de Iznájar: A Castle with a Rich History
At the top of the La Villa district stands Castillo de Iznájar, a recognizable monument with a long history. Construction began in the 8th century and continued until the 15th century. The name of the town is directly linked to the castle, derived from the Arabic words "hisn" (castle) and "al-ashar" (joyful). Over the centuries, this fortified building has served various purposes and remains an essential part of the local heritage.
The Development of the Castle and La Villa
By the 10th century, the castle had taken on the form we recognize today. During the 11th century, the walls were raised, creating an initial walled enclosure. The Nasrids further reinforced these structures and expanded them into the La Villa district. This second walled area was adapted to the terrain and featured gates and walls that protected the town.
From Residence to Heritage
In the 18th century, the castle took on a new function as the residence of the steward of the Duke of Sesa. This role remained until the 20th century. In 1991, the municipality acquired the castle from its last private owners, officially incorporating it into the local heritage.
Restoration and Preservation
To preserve the castle for future generations, archaeological studies were conducted, followed by restoration work in 2007. This project was made possible through investments from the municipality and the province of Córdoba. Additionally, the Junta de Andalucía and the "1% Cultural Fund" contributed to the effort. Thanks to this collaboration, the monument received the care it deserved.
A Place with Multiple Functions
Throughout the centuries, Castillo de Iznájar has served various roles. From a strategic fortress to a residence, and now as a cultural heritage site. This demonstrates how historical buildings can adapt to changing times and needs.
Heritage with a Future
Castillo de Iznájar is more than just a historical structure. It is a testament to how collaboration between local and regional institutions helps preserve cultural heritage. Thanks to these efforts, the castle remains a significant part of the region and a valuable site for visitors.
