City Hall of Seville: A Building with a Story

The Ayuntamiento de Sevilla is not just any city hall. This monumental building, constructed between the 16th and 19th centuries, tells a story of craftsmanship, renovations, and historical events. Since 1931, it has been officially registered as a monument—and rightfully so.

A Smartly Chosen Location

Why is the Ayuntamiento located here? Simple: strategic decisions. The Plaza de San Francisco was once an important trading hub. The monastery that once stood here made way for a new city hall. In 1526, architect Diego de Riaño was tasked with creating a building that was not only functional but also impressive.

From Plateresque Details to Neoclassical Grandeur

What started as a Plateresque façade facing the Plaza Mayor underwent a major transformation in the 19th century. Demetrio de los Ríos and Balbino Marrón decided it was time for an upgrade. When the old San Francisco monastery disappeared, the Ayuntamiento gained a new neoclassical façade facing Plaza Nueva. Inside, two courtyards were added, along with an imposing staircase.

More Than a City Hall

Step inside, and you'll immediately notice that this building is more than just a place where documents are signed. The grand staircase, the chapter hall, and an impressive collection of paintings make it a true museum. Here, you will also find the official city emblem of Seville, adding even more historical significance to the building.
