In southern Spain, summer often comes with a sweet, spiky treat: the higo chumbo. This cactus fruit is a regular on markets and in street stalls across Andalusia. It grows on the paddle cactus and is known locally as "chumbo." During the warmer months, you'll spot it freshly peeled and ready to eat.

Antigua Real Fábrica de Tabacos
The Antigua Fábrica de Tabacos (Old Tobacco Factory) in Seville is an impressive example of industrial architecture. This historic building was established in the 18th century as Europe’s first tobacco factory. Today, it serves as the main campus of the University of Seville and is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Main Campus of the University of Seville
Until 1950, the factory was used for tobacco processing. After production moved to Los Remedios, the building was repurposed. Following an extensive renovation, it was transformed into the main campus of the University of Seville, now housing the Rectorate.
Impressive Architecture
With dimensions of 185 by 147 meters, it is one of the largest and best-preserved industrial buildings in Europe. The design has a Renaissance character with influences from the Herrerian style. Notable features include spacious courtyards, stone façades with pilasters, and the grand entrance gate on Calle San Fernando. Inside, you will find expansive galleries and as many as 14 courtyards.
What Can You See Today?
The building houses a remarkable art collection belonging to the university, including paintings and the Gipsoteca. This museum space features over a hundred plaster casts, ranging from Mesopotamian and Egyptian art to 20th-century sculptures.
Notable Highlights
A standout piece is the Christ of the Good Death (1620) by Juan de Mesa, which adorns the altar of the chapel. Another remarkable feature is the monumental wrought-iron gate on Calle San Fernando, crafted around 1860 by the Portilla Hermanos foundry.
