Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla: A Glimpse into History

The Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla in Carmona is an architectural masterpiece with a long and diverse history. This structure, older than the Giralda in Seville, is a vivid account of the events that have shaped the city over the centuries.

A Monument of Centuries

The imposing stones of the Puerta de Sevilla reflect the traces of various civilizations. Iberian peoples, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, and Christians have all contributed to the development of this fortress.

In the 8th century BC, the Carthaginians gave the original tower a robust, square character to withstand Roman attacks. The Romans further fortified the complex during the reign of Emperor Augustus, adding gates and a temple, remnants of which are still visible today.

Carmona: An Impregnable Fortress

During the 1st century AD, Julius Caesar described Carmona as "the strongest city in Baetica." Its strategic location and fortified walls made it a key site in the region.

Under Islamic rule, the fortress received new additions. In the 10th century, a horseshoe arch was placed, followed by a second in the 12th century. In the 14th century, King Pedro I carried out further modifications to modernize the complex.

Restorations and Visiting

In the 1960s, surrounding houses were removed to enhance the monument's prominence. The last major restoration took place in 1973, restoring several spaces, such as the Hall of the Prisoners, the Courtyard of the Water Tanks, and the Tower of Gold.

From the tower, you have a panoramic view of Carmona, an experience that completes the visit to this historic site.

Tips

A Time Capsule in Stone

Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla is more than a relic of the past. It is a tangible reminder of the cultural and strategic role that Carmona has played throughout the ages. From Carthaginian fortifications to Roman enhancements and Islamic modifications, each period has left its mark on this impressive fortress.
