Alcazaba de Guadix
The Alcazaba de Guadix is one of the city's most striking landmarks. Built in the 11th century under the Zirid dynasty, it has stood the test of time.
In its early years, the fortress was constructed using lime and stone, following the building style of the Zirids. Over the centuries, it underwent several renovations and reinforcements. The most significant upgrade added a second, higher inner wall and an imposing residential tower at the heart of the fortress.
Archeological Excavations at the Alcazaba of Guadix
Over the years, several excavations have taken place, though with long pauses in between. In 1986, a dig was carried out to support restoration work in the highest part of the Alcazaba. Led by María Raya Cárdenas, the project revealed internal structures such as a water reservoir, pipelines, courtyards, and walls. These rested on untouched ground made of compact, green clay.
Initially, experts dated the structures to the 10th century. Among the findings were Ibero-Roman fragments mixed with Andalusian pieces. These may have come from nearby sites or been displaced during earlier landscaping efforts on the hill. In the end, no restoration was carried out, and the remains were covered again.
Even though no visible traces remain, the 1986 excavation provided valuable insights into the Alcazaba’s history. A fortress with layers of the past, waiting to be uncovered.
